Drip Happens
The Pollock Myth I Wish Was Real
Jackson Pollock: Genius, Acrobat, or Accidental Innovator?
Confession time: I’m not a huge Jackson Pollock fan.
There. I said it. Go ahead and gasp with horror.
But I recently heard a story about him that was so wild, I wanted it to be true. The rumor? That Pollock was drunk, stumbled across a canvas, splattered paint everywhere, looked down, and said, “Actually… not bad.” And boom—drip painting was born.
Naturally, I had to check the fax (because facts are so 2025).
And, well… there’s no hard evidence. Zero. Zilch. Nada.
Turns out, it’s just one of those juicy art world myths that refuses to die.
What is true:
Pollock painted with his whole body. He laid his canvases flat on the floor and attacked them from all angles like a paint-slinging ninja. Sticks. Hardened brushes. Turkey basters. (I think I will try our turkey baster today. I hope Cindy doesn’t get too mad.)
So no, he didn’t invent drip painting by tripping over a canvas mid-bender.
But honestly? If he had… that would’ve been peak artist energy.
Got any artist myths you wish were true? I’m always collecting new legends.
