My Art Costs That Much Because I Like Eating

A Buyer’s Guide to Not Asking That Out Loud

Let’s set the scene.

You walk into a gallery. You see a painting. It’s beautiful. It’s powerful. It stirs something in your soul.

Then you look at the price tag and suddenly the only thing stirring is your blood pressure.

“Why is that so expensive?”

You think it.

You whisper it.

Some of you even say it out loud (you know who you are).

So this blog is for you. And for all the artists who have had to politely smile while dying a little inside.

Get your calculators out. We are going to do some math:

1. Time — And I Don’t Mean Just the Painting Time

Yes, the painting took 60 hours.

But also:

• 20 years of skill development

• 4 bad backs

• Countless hours watching YouTube tutorials at 2am

• And 1 very awkward figure drawing class in 1992

You’re not paying for a product.

You’re paying for a lifetime of practice that made that product even possible.

2. Materials – AKA, Fancy Stuff That Costs More Than Your Sofa

Oil paints don’t grow on trees.

Good brushes cost more than steak dinners.

A single canvas can run $200+. And let’s not even talk about the frame. That thing is practically a mortgage.

3. Emotion (the Artist’s, Not Yours)

That piece you’re looking at? It was part therapy, part exorcism.

We painted it while thinking about lost love, childhood memories, or the time our motorcycle got repossessed but we still had to show up to a gallery opening and smile.

You’re buying a feeling, not just a thing. That’s why it feels expensive.

4. Originality – The Last Unicorn

You can buy prints. You can buy posters. You can get a canvas of “Live, Laugh, Love” at Target for $9.99. But an original, hand-painted, one-of-a-kind work of art? That’s rare.

And rare things have value.

You say, “But I Still Can’t Afford It…”

Totally fair!

We’re not here to shame your wallet. Just your manners.

Instead of saying:

“Why is that so expensive?”

Try this:

“Wow, this is incredible. I can see how much went into it.”

“Do you offer prints or smaller works?”

“What’s the story behind this piece?”

Trust me, we’ll love you forever.

In Case You Zoned Out … here is the short version:

Art is expensive because time, talent, trauma, and titanium white cost money.

If you can’t afford it, no problem.

Just don’t stand next to it loudly saying, “My son could paint this.”

We’re all out here just trying to create beauty and pay for shoes.

So be kind, be curious, and for the love of gesso… don’t complain about the price out loud.

Have you ever had someone say something ridiculous about your work or pricing?

What’s the wildest thing you’ve heard?

Drop it in the comments—I need the laughs.

Or the therapy.

Possibly both.
